Make Decluttering Part of Your Spring Cleaning for Better & Lasting Results

Updated: May 11, 2021

Spring is just around the corner and you may be thinking about spring cleaning. It freshens and brightens up the home and is a great time to open up the windows and get out of the way many tasks that aren't done regularly. The feeling after a good spring clean is amazing. If you up your game and add decluttering and organizing to this, it will be more long lasting and help you to truly enjoy your home.

Truthfully, just like cleaning, our clutter needs maintenance. Whether we haven't decluttered in decades or just years, things can pile up and it can get in the way of a functioning home that we truly love.

My suggestion, if you already spring clean, add decluttering to your routine and you won't regret it. To get a really good deep clean, you need to remove items out of storage to wash those spaces inside and out anyway. This will help you to kill two birds with one stone. This doesn't have to be the ultimate declutter, just make sure the things you are putting back are things that make sense to keep. It may be a good time to get rid of things such as items you don't use, have expired, are broken, or even just don't match. I want you to add a garbage bag for garbage and a bag or a box for donations to your toolbox for cleaning. If you don't spring clean, draw a large square on a piece of paper and draw vertical and horizontal lines so that it is divided into 4 sections. Title the sections by season and add what you can tackle in each season so that everything major can be done every year. This is a great way to break it down if you don't have time to do it all in the spring. Cleaning the shed may be more enjoyable in the spring or summer, leaving you time to do the closets in the fall.

Adding decluttering to your spring cleaning may seem like a lot more work but I promise, a home that functions saves time later. When you invest time in doing it now, it will prevent it from building up for years and years. It will save you time by making your home easier to tidy and less clutter to clean around. It will get easier every year. The first time, if you don't declutter regularly, will definitely be the hardest. Remember that after that, it will be much easier every year. Invest the time so that you can truly enjoy your home and so that it functions - remembering, you own your space, it doesn't own you. You can make your home a place that you truly enjoy and are proud of.

When you start, take some before photos for inspiration and see all the progress you're making.
