To reach any goal, it is really important to have the right mindset. This is true in all areas of your life so of course there is a successful mindset that will help you reach your goals when it comes to home organization. There are certain things that can get into your mind that can benefit you and things that can deter you from reaching home organization. This article, we will focus on the success. If you would like to learn about obstacles, feel free to head on over to my blog post that focuses on that here.
We are going to cover the answer to these questions. What is a successful mindset, how do we get into the right mindset, and how to stay in this mindset long enough to reach your goals.
What is a successful mindset?
In order to get yourself into the right mindset, you have to identify what it means to even have a successful mindset. If you don't know what it looks like, how can you even recognize it when you have it? A mindset of success is one that helps you on your way to success. It is a huge deciding factor about whether or not we will reach our goals many of the times. You know you have this mindset when you are overcoming obstacles, persevering, learning, and improving. Let's break it down.
Mindset 1 - See Yourself as an Organized Person.
This is HUGE. If you don't see yourself as someone who is organized, how will you EVER reach your goals? In order to achieve tackling home organization, you have to start looking at yourself as someone who is an organized person. It is sort of similar to not trying a beginner running program because you are "not a runner". What does that even mean? How do you know you're not a runner? Assuming you don't have any injuries or serious conditions preventing you from running, this is a limiting belief. You don't want to limit your potential based on self doubt.
Mindset 2 - Enjoy the Process
Once you decide you are going to get your home organized, try to enjoy the process. Sure, it is hard work. You might have days where you would rather be watching tv instead of organizing. Don't fret. Organizing can actually be enjoyable. Once you get started, you will really get excited about the changes you are beginning to see. Enjoying the progress, I believe, is a key to success on any major goal. You will be more likely to continue, develop habits that will stick, and overcome challenges if you learn to enjoy it!
Mindset 3 - Embrace Things that Make you Unique
When it comes to organization, it is really and truly not a one sized fits all approach. I cannot stress that enough. There are different levels of organization and many different systems you can set up in order to organize in a way that will truly work well for you. It is similar to assuming that every runner runs marathons. Maybe you are not an elite organizer at the highest level. That's okay. You are going to be organized on a level that works for you. The only way you will know the best way to organize for YOU, is trying. There are shortcuts to figuring out what you might be more likely to do, but in the end you will really learn by experience.
Mindset 4 - Be Okay With Failure
This may sound completely counterproductive. Who wants to fail? Almost nobody! So why is failure even part of a mindset of success? I use this word loosely because you may not define setbacks as failures and really, I don't either. I use this word for the purpose of this article for one reason only. So you learn not to fear it! Many people miss out on their hopes and dreams because they fear failure. This doesn't necessarily mean take high risks but it does mean putting yourself out there. Failure doesn't have to be bad. Often, it is the very thing that leads to success - if you don't give up! Failure may redefine your goals. They often do! That's not a bad thing. The bad thing would be to allow the fear of failure to get in your way of even trying! When you ultimately do hit some sort of failure in the form of a setback or roadblock, you will be prepared! You will take it as an opportunity!
Mindset 5 - Manifest Self Love
I don't know if it really needs to be said that low self esteem doesn't bring upon much success. When you have self love, you forgive yourself for your mistakes, you embrace imperfections, and most importantly you believe in yourself. You will be much more likely to do things for the right reasons and be more willing to take the lead when it comes to your happiness, rather than waiting for someone to step in and do it for you. If this isn't like you, you may find this difficult at first. If you struggle a lot, you may benefit from trying different techniques, reaching out to a friend, or speaking with a professional. That's okay if you do that. Regardless, if you can master self love this will really help you along your way on your road to success.
Mindset 6 - Progress Not Perfection
Determined to be perfect is a destroyer of progress. If you feel like you struggle with perfectionism, feel free to read more about it here . Truthfully, perfectionism is one of the most debilitating things we may deal with. A successful person doesn't focus on trying to be perfect. They see progress in what they do and focus their mind on that. A successful mindset means being grateful for what you have and for how far you have come. You will celebrate small wins. You won't be so overwhelmed. Focusing on progress means you are less likely to drain yourself with overthinking!
How to Get Into a Successful Mindset
If you struggled with any of the mindset areas, that's okay. Many of us have been there. The thing is, practicing self control in our thoughts makes a huge difference. Like anything, it just takes practice. I do have some practical steps you can take to help trigger the mindset that leads to success.
Action 1 - Celebrate Small Wins
When you take steps to reach a goal, realize that you have done the hardest thing - getting started. Successful people celebrate small wins and milestones. While focusing on the end goal is something that helps keep us focused, the small wins help us to find more delight in the journey and start to get rid of the perfectionism inside. It is giving yourself a high 5 or a pat on the back for doing something hard. It makes the journey a little more bearable.
Action 2 - A Little At a Time
This goes hand-in-hand with celebrating small wins. It gives us more to celebrate because we are completing more and starting less. If what we start and what we complete are out of balance, we are going to feel like we are spinning our wheels, making a bigger mess, and going nowhere. Be realistic and do what is manageable. You will see, you will feel less overwhelmed and you will be more likely not to tire yourself out on the journey. Being able to take smaller steps will give you more positive association with organizing which will ultimately help you identify yourself as an organized person - because you will be much less likely to hate it!
Action 3 - Compare to Only Yourself
We live in a time where most of what we see from people are the highlight reels of their life. Social medial helps people boast about their greatest assets on their very best days. This is known to completely reduce self esteem of anyone who is in the habit of comparing themselves to others. If you love yourself, you will give yourself grace not to compare with anyone else. Looking at Pinterest homes in the beginning may not be what you need, especially if you are looking at pictures of their house and pictures of your house, wondering why yours doesn't look like that. You have to give yourself the grace to meet yourself where you are, not where you think you should be. It can be really good to take before and after photos because you will really start seeing your progress. Progress photos can be very inspiring to others. When you don't compare, you will be able to celebrate other people's success. Their success will be your success.
Action 4 - Envision the End Result
When you are driving a car hoping to go on a nice vacation, you'll want to have a destination in mind. It will help you to take the right roads and help you take appropriate actions. If you are set out to an organizing journey, we should try to imagine the result. It will really help us to stay on the right track. You may have a timeline that you wish to follow. Remember goals should be S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time Bound). Don't be afraid to dream big. You won't reach what you never set out to do.
Action 5 - Get Your Creative Juices Flowing
This works really well with action 4. Once we envision the result we want to have, it can be really fun to find neat products and playing around with a bit of curiosity and creativity. It will help your home be a reflection of you. It is really good to start with a bit of a clean state. Remove all your things from a space and it will give you a blank canvas to work with. You may have lots of fun with it!
Action 6 - Try the 5-Second Rule
Motivation isn't a reliable feeling. It comes and goes whenever it wishes. It is simply a feeling. If we act only when we are motivated, we are in a sense saying we will only work at it if we have the impulse. That is just not going to work.
Mel Robbins, a very successful author, public speaker, and life coach created a concept called the 5-Second Rule. If you really are struggling to find motivation, I would try it! The 5-Second Rule is a way to stop the thought process before we talk ourselves out of doing that we don't feel like doing, which evidentially takes all of 5 seconds. She has a book called the 5 second rule which is amazing and she talks about it on many platforms.
If you would like to watch a video about the 5 Second Rule, view it here: (130) Mel Robbins: 5 Second Rule - YouTube
I have tried it and I found it lifechanging! If you don't want to do any reading or learning about it, just try it. Whenever you feel like you should organize and you have the opportunity to, count down from 5 and immediately take action! It stops the overthinking and planning and just gets you up and moving!
How To Stay In The Successful Mindset Long Enough to Reach Your Goal?
You are going to stay in this mindset long enough to reach your goal when you realize that this is a journey. Use the tools I spoke about earlier to find motivation. You need to hold yourself accountable and sort of parent yourself. It is a great idea to put reminders on your phone. Reflect on the reason why you want to reach your goal, acting on incentive instead of motivation. Remember when things don't go well or if you get behind, this is the failure that I was telling you to embrace. I did my whole home a year and a half ago and I let some areas become chaotic again. I took that as an opportunity to understand what it means for me to maintain, what I can do, and what I shouldn't do. Save this article somewhere so you can read it over again and again whenever you feel like you need to get back to the right mindset. Practice the tools. Remember you will get better. Feel free to like my Facebook page and read my other posts for more tools. Do what you can do keep the momentum going. Share your excitement.
Successful people face challenges and do not let it stop them! Think of yourself as a successful person and you got it!
