Do you ever feel exhausted after a long day and just want to put your feet down and relax? Like - really relax. Do you have extra work before you get to do anything when you get home? Is cooking dinner harder or is getting ready in the morning a little more difficult? Are you missing important appointments and events?
You should make organization and maintenance part of your self care routine, at least periodically. If organizing is part of your self care routine, you will see a huge improvement in your mental health, work and career, parenting, and other goals. Here is some free advice as to why and things you can do right now to improve these areas.
Let's face it, we all have moments in which disorganization negatively impacts our life. Yes, even me.
But I have learned that being more organized and taking a little time to maintain, makes life so much less stressful. There are less to-do's in our heads and we can really focus on what is most important.
This is why I am convinced, we all need to take a little time to become a little more organized. Having other experts to guide you and help you understand things about organization you might not have considered and perhaps get the mindset shift you need to organize just a little more effectively.
Free Tips you can implement right now:
Take small steps. Think small. I know it sounds weird right. You need to be way more organized but to slow down. Trying to get organized and change habits too quickly can backfire. It can be likened to yo-yo dieting. Trying to change your habits all at once. It might feel good for a while and you might experience some benefits, but truthfully if they are not full on habits yet, you likely might backslide. So...where should you start?
Declutter a little bit at a time. I know that no one wants to hear this that to be more organized you have to get rid of some things. Yes, you have to make a little bit of a sacrifice of stuff to renegotiate the where you are designing and making use of your space. You likely have stuff hidden that you don't even know exists, is broken, and maybe you have multiples of the same items all throughout the house. Decluttering what you no longer need is the best way to make the biggest difference. Do not skip this.
Find space that fits. Once you declutter, you need to make sure you have a place to store these items in a way that works for you. This is not the time to go start buying organizing equipment such as more shelving, more baskets, more hangers. You need to sort items to figure out where in the house they belong, and then what cupboards/drawers, and place other like items in this space. Once you see how many items you will have in total of the space, that is when you can start putting things into baskets and bins and get a little more technical.
Tackle small spaces rather than big ones. It is way more effective to start and complete a small drawer then start and not finish an entire room. Remember clutter accumulates into more clutter. It will stress you out the next day because it's not a completed task. You could risk putting it to the back of your to do list, procrastinate, and then end up with a bigger mess than when you started.
Streamline digital. The more things you are signed into, the more different places you store your notes, the more places you make your task lists, the more likely you are to run into problems. If you are not someone who does this kind of organization digitally, then keep it all in one spot, like the fridge. But if you do like to organize these things digitally, make sure you are not mixing things up. Use phone alarm reminders when you have appointments. Delete emails that are days old or things you no longer need. This will also help you know that you have your errands, appointments, lists, and other things in the outside world more organized so that you can truly relax during your down time.
